چکیده

Title of Thesis: HIGH ACCELERATIONS PRODUCED THROUGH SECONDARY IMPACT AND ITS EFFECT ON RELIABILITY OF PRINTED WIRING ASSEMBLIES Stuart Taylor Douglas, Master of Science, 2010 Thesis directed by: Professor Abhijit Dasgupta Department of Mechanical Engineering The focus of this thesis is the investigation of extremely high accelerations through secondary impact and its effect on reliability of printed wiring assemblies. The test equipment consists of a commercially available drop system and a commercially available attachment termed a Dual Mass Shock Amplifier (DMSA), which extends the impact acceleration range to as much as 30,000 Gs by utilizing secondary impact dynamics. Further secondary impacts between the test vehicle and fixture are intentionally generated in simulation and tested experimentally to imitate board 'slap' phenomena in product assemblies, and to generate even further amplification of the acceleration at various locations on the test specimen. In this thesis a detailed description of the test equipment and modeling techniques are provided. Model complexity ranges from simple analytic closed-form rigid-body mechanics to detailed nonlinear dynamic finite element analysis. The effects of different equipment design parameters (table mass, spring stiffness, table clearance) are investigated through parametric modeling. The effects of contact parameters (constraint enforcement algorithms, stiffness, damping) on model accuracy are explored. Test fixtures for high shock accelerations are discussed and used for board level reliability testing of printed wire assemblies containing WLCSP49s and MEMS microphones. Impact of printed wiring board coatings on the reliability of lead-free chip-scale package interconnections

When lead-free solder alloys mix with lead-free component and board metallizations during reflow soldering, the solder interconnections become multicomponent alloy systems whose microstructures cannot be predicted on the basis of the SnPb metallurgy. To better understand the influences of these microstructures on the reliability of lead-free electronics assemblies, SnAgCu-bumped components were...

Effect of ENEPIG Surface Finish on the Vibration Reliability of Solder Interconnects

Surface finishes are used to preserve and promote solderability of exposed copper metallization on printed wiring boards. While in the best of worlds, the solder used in assembly should dictate the solder interconnect reliability, surface finishes are known to have an effect. The effect of surface finishes on solder interconnect reliability can be particularly strong under high strain rate load...

Interconnection Evaluation Technology for Printed Wiring Boards

As a developer of world-class products including server and network devices, Fujitsu recognizes the printed wiring board (PWB) as a core component among the various components of those products. One basic element supporting high-quality PWBs is through-hole interconnection reliability. Existing methods for evaluating interconnections typically involve temperature cycle tests that subject the PW...
